Youth Fly Dressing Competition Results 2004

standards increase

The Welsh National Youth Fly Dressing competition goes from strength to strength with the standard getting better and better every year. There is no doubt that given the correct tuition the youth of today enjoy fly dressing and in some instances it becomes more important than fishing itself. Wales has a great tradition in fly dressing starting in 1899 when William Roberts wrote the first ever Welsh book on Welsh flies based on the experiences of anglers fishing Llyn Ogwen in North Wales. Then came the influence of the Scottish keepers on Welsh fly-dressing (They had been imported to Wales to try and control the poachers who at the time were the bane of the large Welsh estates). After this came the excellent ‘home made’ patterns of the slate quarrymen of north Wales. In recent years the name of Pryce Tannant has dominated the dressing of the fully built wings salmon flies. Now there are ‘new shepherds on the Welsh hills’ and fly dressing amongst members of the Welsh Youth Fly Fishing Team and the fly dressing that goes on in evening classes is of an exceptionally high standard. The two fly dressers that adjudicated the Youth fly dressing competition in 2004 were Shane Jones from Aberystwyth Angling Assoc. and Steffan Jones from Llandysul Angling Club. In their adjudication both praised the standard of the dressing and gave some very valuable advice to the young competitors. The class for those under fourteen years of age was won by Sean Jones (Mountain Ash Angling club). Kieron Jenkins (Thorn Angling Club) was the close runner up. Keiron had won the competition in 2002 and 2003 and was on the trail of a hat-trick. The third was Rebecca Lange from the Teifi Trout Association – a club which produces many young male and female competitors both for fishing and dressing flies. Teifi Trout Assoc. is to be complimented on its achievements with young anglers – their young fishers and fly dressers figure prominently each year in angling competitions. The standard of dressing for the fourteen to eighteen years class was also high and Gavin Perry (Teifi Trout Assoc.) was winner. Hywell Davies ( Tawe Angling Club) was second and Jamie Pearson (Maesnant AA) was third. Many of the winners in the fly dressing competition will be fishing for the Welsh Youth Fly Fishing team in the International match on Lough Conn, Ireland in July. Confidence is high that the exquisite flies they dress will help them to obtain gold in the International match.
