WELSH OPEN-BANK CHAMPIONSHIP on Elan Valley Lakes on Sunday 14th August 2011.
This is a highly popular competition – and is the only one we have which gives anglers the opportunity to fish for truly wild brown trout in some of the most beautiful and remote areas of Wales.Such fishing epitomises the pinnacle of dry fly-fishing for the many as it calls for walking long distances to remote areas before making that first cast. The fish – when they come to the fly – are small – and are weighed in ounces rather than pounds – but catching even one brings tremendous joy to the angler. This year 52 anglers turned up at the Visitors’ Centre in the Elan Valley to take part – and it was a joy to see seven youths in their midst. The 2011 Welsh Bank Champion and winner of the Wynn Kirby Cup was Keith Cadogan (Mountain Ash) with 8 fish weighing 3lbs 5ozs 2nd: Jeff Holcomb 3rd Paul Harvey 4th Philip Jehu
Winners of the Luron Shield (for teams of three) were: Mountain Ash with 13 fish weighing 6 lbs 8ozs (Keith Cadogan, Jeff Holcomb, Mark McCarthy) 2nd: Llanidloes ‘B’ Wynn Gwalchmai, Ken Llewellyn, Rob Davies) 3rd Team Jehu Gavin, Philip and Tom Jehu) Paul Harvey presented the prizes to the winners on behalf of his father.
