History of WSTAA

Yn y pum degau cynnar teimlai llawer o bysgotwyr blaenllaw yng Nghymru for angen corff cenedlaethol i'w cynrychioli ac i amddiffyn eu buddiannau. Tan hynny ynysig a rhannedig oedd lleisiau'r pysgotwyr a'r cymdeithasau pysgota ledled y wlad.Er mwyn cael un llais i'r pysgotwyr sefydlwyd Cymdeithas Pysgota Pluen Cymru (CPPC) yn 1953.

O'r dechrau bu CPPC yn cynorthwyo'r clybiau pysgota a cheir tystiolaeth amlwg o hyn yn yr adroddiad gan y Gymdeithas yn 1967 ar Parhad Cymdeithasau Pysgotwyr Cymru. O ganlyniad i'r adroddiad hwn, cafwyd grantiau i gynorthwyo Clybiau i brynu hawliau pysgota, ac i gystadlu yn erbyn cwmnioedd estron a'u hatal rhag prynu dyfroedd Cymru

Yn 1978 newidiwyd enw'r Gymdeithas i 'Cymdeithas Genweirwyr Eog a Brithyll Cymru' (CGEBC) er mwyn cynrychioli pob math o bysgotwyr yn ogystal a physgotwyr pluen.Yn ystod y blynyddoedd paratowyd adroddiadau ar wahanol bynciau perthnasol i bysgodfeydd, pysgota a physgotwyr. Yn eu plith cafwyd adroddiadau ar 'Llygredd a'r Gyfraith;

Problemau Argaeau Mor; Potsian yng Nghymru ; Diogelu Pysgodfeydd Cymru;Pysgota Sewin yn Afonydd Cymru;Problemau Pysgodfeydd Brithyll Brown yn Nwr Asidig afonydd Cymru; Mae'r Gymdeithas yn chwarae rhan bwysig yng nghynllun grantiau'r Loteri. Yn 1982 ac hefyd yn 1994 bu CGEBC yn ymladd yn galed yn erbyn rhwydo yn ein hafonydd gan wario miloedd o bunnoedd ar ymchwiliadau cyhoeddus. Bu'r blynyddoedd diwethaf yn brysur iawn wrth i'r gymdeithas gyflwyno gwybodaeth i wahanol Bwyllgorau yn ymwneud a deddfau newydd ar gyfer pysgota, yn enwedig y Polisi newydd ar gyfer y brithyll ynghyd a chwtogi ar bysgota eogiaid gwanwyn. Bu blwyddyn 2001 yn un anodd iawn oherwydd clwy'r traed a'r genau ond serch hynny cafwyd cefnogaeth o du'r Cynulliad i glybiau pysogta.Fe drefnwyd seminar ar Amcan Un a chafwyd siaradwyr o Iwerddon i helpu. Wrth ddaathlu ei hanner canfed penblwydd y mae arian amcan un yn debyg o wella pysgodfeydd Cymru ac mae lle i gredu bydd pethau yn gwella dros yr hanner canrif nesaf .

Pan sefydlwyd y WFFA yn 1952 y nod oedd cael gwell cyfleusterau i'r pysgotwyr a gwarchod afonydd Cymru. Delfrydau uchel a mawr yw ein teyrnged i'r rhai hynny a fu'n cyflawni'r amcanion yma dros y blynyddoedd ac i'r rhai sydd wrthi o hyd.

The Welsh Fly Fishing Association (WFFA) was founded in 1952.Prominent Welsh Anglers of the day were conscious of the need for a National Body to represent game angling interests in the Principality. The Welsh anglers and angling clubs were then isolated and divided. Thus the WFFA was formed.(Changed to WSTAA in 1978.)

Since its inception the WFFA sought to improve the lot of the angling clubs and in 1967 its report on the Survival of Welsh Angling Clubs resulted in grant aid being made by the Welsh Office and this enabled Welsh angling clubs to halt the 'Cheque Book' invasion as the practice of purchasing fishing rights by outside interests was then described.

From time to time WSTAA has produced papers on subjects such as Pollution and the Law;The Problems of Barrages; Poaching in Wales; Problem of the Brown trout in Acidic waters of Welsh Rivers, To stock or Not to Stock, Objective One, Sewin..

WSTAA has financially supported projects such as the Usk Barrage, Buying out of Greenland Nets. It promoted a special Seminar on Objective One and got influential speakers from Ireland.

The WSTAA has been involved in the Net Limitation Exercise spending over £20,000 pounds on the Public Enquiry in 1982 and again spent a lot of time on the same issue in 1995.The WSTAA is anxious that salmon and sewin are given a fair chance to return to the rivers of Wales .The recent years have been exceptionally busy with the National Byelaws, The Legislative Group, Devolution and Welsh Assembly and the Review of the Environment Agency all demanding time and effort. The year 2001 was an exceptionally difficult one yet but with the help of the Welsh Assembly the clubs were compensated for their losses. The WSTAA celebrate its half century of in 2002 and with the Objective One money now pouring into the Welsh fishing scene the Welsh anglers will have something to sing about.

When the WFFA was first formed in 1952 the aim was to safeguard the interest of Welsh anglers and it is to its credit that it has succeeded in doing just that along the years

Gair Gan Y Cadeirydd - A Word from The Chair

Yr wyf wedi cyflawni blwyddyn yn y swydd bwysig o gadeirio pwyllgor WSTAA. Er fy mod ar y cychwyn yn teimlo'n swil i'w derbyn, mae'n rhaid i mi gyfaddef fy mod wedi mwynhau y profiad yn fawr iawn - mae'n debyg bod y cyfnod o gadeirio clwb Genweirwyr Gwynedd wedi fy mharatoi yn dda ar gyfer y dasg! Yr wyf wedi synnu gymaint o waith sydd gan WSTAA i'w gyflawni wrth geisio diogelu pysgodfeydd Cymru. Mae yna alw cynyddol ar i ni'r pysgotwyr ofalu am ein hafonydd a'n llynnoedd yn enwedig oherwydd y y broblem fawr o lygredd. Yr adeg yma llynedd yr oeddwn yn edrych ar galendar 2003 ac yn synnu at yr holl ddigwyddiadau o'n blaen, Erbyn hyn maent oll wedi eu cynnal ac wedi bod yn hynod o lwyddiannus. Mae calendar eleni eto yn edrych yr un mor llawn a gobeithio bydd y gweithgareddau i gyd yr un mor llwyddiannus. Mae wedi bod yn gyfnod prysur iawn i ni bysgotwyr y gogledd a da yw medru dweud bod yna welliannau enfawr wedi eu gwenud, ac yn dal i gael eu gwneud, i'n pysgodfeydd. Cofiwch os oes gennych unrhyw broblem, anfonwch air atom a byddwn yn falch i'ch helpu.

Gobeithio bydd tymor pysgota 2004 yn un llwyddiannus iawn i chi i gyd.

Cledwyn Jones (Cadeirydd)

Little did I realise twelve months ago when I took the chair of WSTAA that it would have been such a busy, yet worthwhile, year. Both my wife Margaret and I have found it most enjoyable. WSTAA has the task of attending to the many problems that arise when trying to look after Welsh fisheries and ensuring that they are given a fair deal.

This year we will be busy with the Water Framework Directive and plans are afoot to hold a seminar on the subject. We are now seeing the benefit of the money that has come our way from Europe, the Assembly and many other organisations that care for the countryside and conservation. When WSTAA promoted the Symposium on Objective One, little did we think what difference it would make.

This is a very interesting and exciting time and it is gratifying to see so many Welsh fisheries getting financial support. We trust that all the work now being done on habitat restoration will bring more fish back into our rivers and we can only hope the fish will avoid the nets out at sea and are given a chance to come back to their native rivers. The netting of our salmon out at sea is a major problem and this year WSTAA will be taking up the issue with the appropriate minister at the Assembly. If you or your club has any other problem than please let us know.

Last year the Welsh Fly Fishing Teams did well with the Ladies and the two Senior Teams (Spring and Autumn ) winning silver. This year the Autumn match will be on Brenig and let us hope that it will be gold this time.

May I wish you all a very successful 2004 fishing season.

Cledwyn Jones (Chairman)
